After holding and reassuring Clare before her goodbye meeting with Bob, Jesse left his condo and headed for the Times. Burt waited by his desk when he got in.

“Vacation’s over McMillan, time to get cracking. I want an entire Panama series. That place is full of good copy, and I know you can get me plenty of inside dirt.”

“I thought we’re getting a lot of good stuff from the wire?”

“Why would I rely on wire copy when I have you? Put some fresh angles on my desk by the end of the day,” demanded Burt. “And I want some juicy Panamanian characters in the story. Someone like Gonzales—not that goofball Noriega. Someone everyone admires and looks up to—like Omar Torrijos. As I recall, they loved him, and a lot of people were really upset when his plane went down.”

Jesse nodded, thinking of Pablo’s devastation when his favorite uncle died.

“Look, McMillan. The Gonzales story is old news,” said Burt. “My nose tells me you know a lot more about Panama than you’re saying—so out with it.”
